New Ride
Westchester/Rockland
, 11/5/98
It looks like the Eiffel Tower and it might land in Westchester. A 180-foot-tall amusement ride, which will launch patrons skyward at 45 mph, will sprout from the top of a new mall in a structure designed to look like the Eiffel Tower. The Huguenot Tower, approved 6-1 Wednesday night by the New Rochelle Planning Board, will top out at about 230 feet and be the city's tallest structure. Developer Louis Cappelli, who is building the shopping and
entertainment center called New Roc City, overcame objections by changing the design of the Space Shot ride from a crane-like needle to a mini-Eiffel Tower. He also agreed to take it down in three years if the board doesn't like it. Board member Phyllis Ross, who cast the only vote against, said, "The new structure certainly looks a lot better. But I can't see it in this particular location."
