Boot for Betsy

New York City, 11/5/98

It hasn't been a good week for Lieutenant Governor Betsy McCaughey (McCoy) Ross. On Tuesday, she placed a distant fifth in the race for governor. Wednesday, her investment banker husband filed for divorce. Wilbur Ross says "It's always a shame when things don't work out in a marriage and people grow apart as Betsy and I have." Ross, who is also a part owner of a chain of 23 newspapers, said he still holds Betsy in high regard and that he would try to end things amicably. During McCaughey Ross' campaign to unseat her boss, Governor George Pataki, Ross yanked more than two million dollars from her warchest. The pair were married in 1995 after a rough engagement during which McCaughey Ross called off the wedding because her then-fiance had yet to finalize his divorce from his first wife. McCaughey Ross, who ran on the Liberal ticket, racked up 76-thousand-172 votes in Tuesday's election. Her political future is also uncertain. She was a Republican Lieutenant Governor who left the party to become a Democrat. But when the Democrats wouldn't nominate her for Governor, she ran as a Liberal.
