No Votes in Queens

New York City, 11/4/98

Some ballots couldn't be casted in Tuesday's election. The breakdown of 100 voting machines in a Queens district in which Democrats outnumber Republicans by a 10-1 ratio angered Democrats and a voter who says that for the first time in 32 years he was prevented from casting a ballot. "You can refer to Rosedale as the place where democracy ends," said Joe Margolin, 53, one of thousands of voters who found that the levers for Democratic candidates Charles Schumer and Eliot Spitzer did not work. Spitzer's campaign officials said Schumer's Senate race opponent, Republican Alfonse D'Amato, and "the Republican machine" were responsible for the voting booth problems. Schumer and D'Amato camp officials did not immediately return phone calls seeking comment. Spitzer is opposing Republican incumbent Dennis Vacco for attorney general in a race that had not been determined. Schumer beat D'Amato in the Senate race. Margolin, the would-be voter, said his machine did not work for some Republican candidates, either. Board of Elections officials would not say the machines in the 29th Assembly District were tampered with, but a voting machine technician was suspended. The U.S. Attorney's office in Brooklyn was investigating.
