Voter Turnout

Hudson Valley, 11/3/98

Voter turnout on this election day is expected to be low. A new poll released on Monday by the Marist Institute for Public Opinion revealed that only half of New York State's voters will vote today. The state has 10.6 million registered voters. New York's lowest voter turnout was in 1990 with 52.3 percent. In 1994, the last governor's election, voter turnout was 60 percent. Blair Horner from the New York Public Interest Research Group says that people don't think their vote matters and that the negative campaigns are a deterrant. Many hope today's election turnout will be high and prove the poll wrong.
