Connecticut, 11/3/98

He was at the top of his class, but now he faces a sexual assault charge on his record. The police recruit who is at the top of his class at the training academy has been charged with sexually assaulting a woman who had passed out after drinking. Fernando Roldan, 27, who was off-duty, allegedly went into a room Sunday in which an intoxicated woman was lay unconscious on a bed, according to The Hartford Courant. He is accused of sexually assaulting her while a 3- year-old child slept in the same room. Police were summoned to the house by a 911 call. Roldan was booked at police headquarters at 4:25 a.m. Sunday on charges of second-degree sexual assault, criminal mischief and risk of injury to a minor. Recruits are full-time, probationary employees of the police department. They are not sworn police officers. The class of 30 recruits at the Hartford Police Training Academy is scheduled to graduate Dec. 11. "He was tops academically," said Lt. Robert Rudewicz, commander of the training academy said of Roldan. "He was well disciplined, a good recruit. This whole incident comes as a real shock to us." Police Chief Joseph F. Croughwell Jr. said Monday that he would probably recommend that Roldan be fired.
