Open Space Campaign
New Jersey, 11/2/98
They are two Republicans pushing for the same referendum. Governor Christie Whitman and fellow Republican, Senate President Donald DiFrancesco, say they're not at odds despite each taking sole credit for a plan to preserve open space. It's just politics. To Whitman, the open space referendum is a cornerstone issue of her second term. To DiFrancesco, it's a feel-good issue that can be placed on a political resume for a future run for governor. The ballot question asks voters to set aside 98 million dollars a year from the sales tax to save one million acres of dwindling open space over the next decade. The question will be on Tuesday's election ballot.
