Deadly Surgery
New Jersey, 11/6/98
A subsidiary of New Brunswick-based Johnson-and-Johnson denies one of its salesman participated in surgery that left a woman dead. New York health officials say two surgeons at Beth Israel Medical Center let Ethicon salesman David Myers operate the controls of a new device. The 30-year-old woman had gone to the Manhattan hospital last November for removal of a uterine cyst. She died of a heart attack after doctors pumped her with too much saline. The woman, whose name was not released, had never consented to the use of the equipment or to the presence of the salesman in the operating room. New York has fined the hospital 30-thousand dollars. One doctor has resigned. The other was suspended for two weeks and has been reinstated.
