AG Race

Hudson Valley, 11/9/98

The counting has begun. State Board of Election officials are counting thousands of paper ballots today to determine a winner in the state attorney general race. With the machine vote all counted, Democratic challenger Eliot Spitzer has a more than 13-thousand vote lead over Republican incumbent Dennis Vacco. But there are more than 140-thousand paper ballots to be counted. About 85-thousand of those ballots are from upstate New York, which tends to favor Republican candidates. Officials will begin counting absentee ballots in the New York City area Thursday. Counties in the area are recounting their local ballots on Monday. The Board of Election says it will accept ballots until November 20th -- so long as they're postmarked November second or earlier. The outcome of the race may not be known for a week or more.
