No Reward
New York City, 11/11/98
There's no reward for a man who helped police. A witness who helped convict a man who shot two New York City police officers can't collect a reward because he called the wrong number. Cop Shot says it can't give the ten thousand dollar reward to 56-year-old Kippax Williams because he called the local precinct, instead of Cop Shot's 800-number. Williams saw John Bynum shoot two officers in their patrol car on August 15th, 1996 in Upper Manhattan. Both officers survived the shooting. They were too hurt to identify their shooter. Bynum testified at two trials. The first ended in a hung jury in JuLy 1997. The second convicted Bynum for attempted murder. Assistant Manhattan District Attorney Gary Halperin says Williams was the only witness. However N-Y-P-D spokeswoman Marilyn Mode says Bynum's information did not lead to an arrest. Detective John Bourges who has been trying to get COP SHOT to pay the reward says the organization pays people who make an anonymous call, and refuse to get involved any further. Bourges says Williams made an identification and then testified at two trials. Bourges says it's no wonder people don't want to help the police. Williams says he's not upset about the reward. He was given a plaque and 500 dollar check by the National Police Defense Foundation Tuesday.
