Tugboat Fire

Hudson Valley, 11/12/98

The fire aboard a tugboat on the Hudson River is finally out Thursday morning. Coast Guard officials say the tugboat was pulling a barge containing two-point-five million gallons of gasoline when the fire started at about 6:30 Wednesday evening. Emergency crews used flame-retardant foam to contain the blaze, which had totally engulfed the tugboat's engine room. Coast Guard crews anchored the barge in the middle of the Hudson River, and another tugboat towed the burning McAllister to a dock in Kingston. There, firefighters tried to drown the fire by shooting foam into the engine room. No injuries were reported and a Coast Guard spokesman says the fire doesn't appear to have caused any gasoline spills. Replacement tugboats are on their way to the scene Thursday morning. Coast Guard officials say the new boats will tow the barge to a dock on Staten Island.
