Hero Officer
Hudson Valley, 11/12/98
A Kent police officer is being heralded as a hero today after diving into Lake Carmel on Veteran's Day and saving a woman whose car plummeted into the chilly waters. Sergeant Jerry Raneri, a 20-year veteran of the police force, was awakened around 8:30 Wednesday morning by the sound of a crash. Raneri said he looked out of his bedroom window and saw a car sinking into the lake. He grabbed his slippers, ran down the driveway, across route 52 and dove into the water. Raneri said he convinced a frightened Anna Kristina Munoz, to roll down the window of her car and then pulled her to safety. The 22-year-old Munoz was taken to Putnam Hospital Center in Carmel where she was treated for exposure. Police say she lost control of her car on the wet roadway, jumped a guardrail and plunged into the lake. Raneri, except for being cold and wet, was unhurt. He proved to be a humble hero, saying, I did what had to be done.
