AG Investigation
, 11/12/98
The investigation continues in the charges against Attorney General Dennis Vacco. Federal prosecutors are investigating campaign contributions state Attorney General Vacco received from donors with ties to a car-leasing company he investigated. The New York Times said in today's paper that the U-S Attorney's office in Brooklyn subpoenaed the company, Oxford Resources, last month. Officials are looking at 46-thousand-dollars in donations given by company executives and subsidiaries to Vacco's 1998 re-election campaign. Vacco began investigating Oxford Resources of Long Island last year after receiving complaints that it was overcharging customers. The case was settled through mediation and the company wasn't forced to pay penalties or restitution. The times reported last month that Oxford executives and subsidiaries gave 8-thousand-500-dollars to Vacco's campaign while he was investigating the company. And last November- less than three weeks after Vacco closed the inquiry - his campaign received an extra 37-thousand-500-dollars from nine Oxford subsidiaries.
