Motorists Save Man
Westchester/Rockland
, 11/12/98
A suicidal man was saved by motorists. State police say a man who tried to kill himself by running into traffic on the state Thruway was rescued when motorists pulled over and restrained him. Trooper Lynwood Law says the man was depressed and had earlier tried to jump from the car he was in with his girlfriend and her two children as they neared the Tappan Zee Bridge in Rockland
County Wednesday morning. The girlfriend pulled the car onto a shoulder, and the 44-year-old man ran into traffic in the southbound lanes, then jumped a median barrier and ran into the northbound lanes. Four motorists pulled over to help, caught the man and held him against the median until police arrived. The man, who police said was from Garnerville, was not charged. He was taken to a county psychiatric facility. His identity was not released.
