Treasurer Charged
, 11/12/98
The former treasurer of the Bellmore Volunteer Exempt Fireman's Benevolent Association has admitted stealing more than 125-thousand-dollars from the organization. Nassau County District Attorney Denis Dillon says 58-year-old Robert Sullivan, pleaded guilty to third-degree grand larceny Thursday. He admitted he embezzled the money by writing checks to himself, his company - Bellmore Tile - or several companies that do business with him. Dillon says Sullivan stole the money between January 1990 and October 1995. The association was created to help the families or members of the Bellmore Fire Department who are disabled or indigent. It is partially funded through an annual two percent rebate of a state property insurance policy and through dues, fundraising and social events. The missing money was discovered after a new board of directors took over in 1996. Sullivan, who lives in Bellmore, will be sentenced in January. He faces up to seven years in prison.
