Carjacker Caught
Westchester/Rockland
, 11/12/98
A man who stole a woman's car was caught by her nephew. The man who allegedly stole a car at knifepoint from a 76-year-old woman had the bad luck to be spotted a few hours later by the woman's nephew -- Mount Vernon Police Chief Michael Mosca. Mosca was driving home from dinner in Yonkers Wednesday night when he saw a red Toyota Tercel like his aunt's, and then noticed the license plate -- MDC-64 -- the vanity license plate his aunt has had for 30 years. Mosca followed in his unmarked car, called in help from his department, and boxed in the Tercel near the Cross County Multiplex Cinema. Anthony Caprioli, a 34-year-old former White Plains resident who said he is homeless, was arrested and charged with criminal possession of stolen property. The aunt, Mary Colton of Mount Vernon, said her attacker - whom she called a "rotten piece of dreck" - pulled a knife on her Wednesday afternoon at the Caldor parking lot in Pelham Manor. He told her give me your keys or I'll kill you. In addition to stealing her car, he allegedly stole 93-dollars in cash.
