The world is on stand-by with the situation in Iraq. President Clinton announced that air strikes might occur if Sadaam Hussein does not cooperate with the United Nations. In our region, members of the military are preparing themselves to be sent to the Middle East. More than 200 airmen were scheduled to depart from McGuire Airforce base in New Jersey Thursday aboard KC-10 refueling aircraft to support the American buildup in the Persian Gulf region. The Air Force, in a
planes were involved in the deployment. In addition, McGuire-based C-141 Starlifter aircraft and crews of the 305th Air Mobility Wing were on standby to support the mission, the release said. With the threat of hostilities against Iraq looming, the exact destination of the planes and crews was not disclosed. McGuire AFB is one of two U.S. bases assigned the KC-10s, which can carry more than 59,000 gallons of fuel for in-flight refueling of other aircraft. The C-141 Starlifter is a cargo aircraft capable of carrying troops and equipment and performing medical evacuation missions. In New York, at Stewart Airforce base in Newburgh, members are preparing to fly out to the Middle East.
