Choice of Power

, 11/11/98

Residents of Long Island will soon have a choice of who they get their power from. The Long Island Power Authority says up to 100-thousand customers will be able to choose their electric supplier starting next year. L-I Power Authority Chairman Richard Kessel tells Newsday that in five years all customers will have the option to switch their carrier. The move was made in response to critics of the state takeoer of LILCO. There was concern that the takeover would shut out competition in the energy market. At this point, switching electric companies would not save cutomers much money though- maybe one dollar out of a hundred. But that could change.
