Court Clerk Resigns
Connecticut, 11/10/98
U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro's mother has quit her probate court job amid allegations that she used a racial slur against a co-worker and initially refused to apologize. Luisa DeLauro publicly announced her resignation Monday from her position as assistant clerk in the city's Probate Court. Nadine Wall, who is black, said Monday that DeLauro had used the racial slur in the past and "nothing was done about it." "I'm not going to tolerate racism on the job," Wall said. "This has been going on for quite some time. This is not the first incident." Wall said DeLauro was told to apologize or she would be fired, but Judge of Probate John Keyes Jr. would not confirm making such an ultimatum. DeLauro, 84, is also a city alderwoman. She has not said if she will step down from that post. "First of all, I deeply regret the argument that I had with Nadine Wall," DeLauro wrote in her resignation letter. "Apparently, in the heat of the moment, I said things that were inappropriate and offended her or could have been interpreted as offensive. I apologize for any hurt that may have caused. I did not mean to offend." Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro, a Democrat, said her mother's letter speaks for itself.
