Moynihan's Retirement
New York City, 11/9/98
Does the name "Moynihan Station" have a ring to it? Senator-elect Charles Schumer says the first bill he hopes to introduce as a senator would be to name a refurbished Penn Station after retiring Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan. Moynihan is a four-term incumbent Democrat who announced last week that he would retire in 2000. Moynihan fought for six years to get 315 million dollars in federal funds to turn the Farley Post Office into a passenger facility and rail hub for trains. The original Penn Station was torn down in 1963. Madison Square Garden and a modern rail facility went up in its place. The destruction of the original station sparked a national movement to landmark and preserve historic buildings. In related news, who will replace Moynihan in 2000? A number of names have been mentioned as U-S Senate candidates when Daniel Patrick Moynihan retires. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Andrew Cuomo, Robert F. Kennedy Junior, and state Comptroller H. Carl McCall are among the Democrats who have been mentioned. Among the Republicans whose names have been bandied about are Representative Rick Lazio of Long Island and Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, both of whom were asked about their aspirations Sunday. Lazio told "Fox News Sunday," says he's looking at the idea. Giuliani says he considering several possibilities for when his mayoral term ends. Asked about his presidential ambitions, Giuliani said: "There are about 50 Republicans that would make a lot better president than Al Gore or any of the Democratic possibilities.
