School Commercialism

Westchester/Rockland , 11/9/98

A local school district is deciding whether to make a deal with Pepsi. If the school decides to make a deal, Somers school district could be the first district in Rockland, Westchester and Putnam Counties to make money off of commercialism. The partnerships of schools and products comes with some criticism. Some people have said it interferes with education and brings commercialism into the schools. Others say that it would help schools finance renovations and could have a financial appeal. Legally, the school district would have to accept bids from other competitors. Kenneth Minichello, Somers school board president intends to examine the pros and cons of the deal and the school board will vote on the issue.
