Driver's Licenses

New Jersey's driver's license might go digital. The Assembly Transportation Committee Monday approved a bill that would place a magnetic strip on the licenses. The strip would electronically store the same information that's already displayed. Sponsors say the licenses would help police stop counterfeiting and underage drinking. The "digital" driver's license stops short of Governor Whitman's "smart card" proposal. There was concern adding personal information to the state's data base would lead to an invasion of privacy. Another bill would make driver's licenses good for ten years. They currently expire in five.
