New Cemetery

Rockland County could soon have a new county cemetery for indigent residents. County Executive C. Scott Vanderhoef is asking the county legislature for 172-thousand dollars to buy one-point-32 acres from the Saint Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Nanuet for the cemetery. Vanderhoef estimates one thousand people can be buried on the land. The projected cost will be 172 dollars per plot. Saint Paul's Lutheran Church will maintain the property for 45-hundred dollars a year, for the first two years. Vanderhoef says the county has an obligation to provide a dignified place of rest for our less fortunate residents. He says the cemetery will handle the county's needs for at least 30 years. He adds although the church is taking care of the property there will be no religious requirements to be buried there.
