Hurricane Mitch
Hudson Valley, 11/9/98
Community members are coming together to get relief supplies to the people of Nicaragua and Central America, but one group has hit a snag. In Nyack, the Rockland Sister Cities project has been helping residents of Nicaragua since 1989, but the last shipment of materials has been blocked. Nicaraguan officials do not consider the project group to be a non-profit organization, so the supplies have been hit with a 40 percent tax. In Nicaraguan law, corporations that don't have the word "foundation" are considered profit. Rep. Benjamin Gilman and the Nicaraguan Embassy are trying to get the supplies released and sent. RNN's Anne Marie O'Keefe will provide other stories of groups trying to help aid victims of Hurricane Mitch.
