Latrell Sprewell got a surprisingly warm welcome last night at the Garden.
They roared when he was introduced. They gave him a standing ovation when he was finished. In between Sprewell showed everyone how good of a player he was before his infamous attack on his old coach.
He scored 21 of his 27 points in a 12-minute outburst to lead the Knicks past the Nets 88-87 in the exhibition opener for both teams.
There were fewer boos for Sprewell than there were for Patrick Ewing, whose popularity took a more recent beating when he was president of the players' union during the lockout.
