Mark Lawrence scored midway through the third period of the New York Islanders' 5-to-4 win at Boston. The Isles managed to end a two-game losing streak despite Jason Allison's hat trick.

Allison and Ken Belanger scored one-58 apart in the first period to put the Bruins on top, 2-to-0. Former Bruin Craig Janney tied the game 3-to-3 26 seconds before Zigmund Palffy gave the Islanders their first lead.

Lapointe and ex-Bruin Ted Donato finished with a goal and an assist and Sergei Nemchinov set up two scores. Felix Potvin turned back 37 shots for his first victory since joining the Islanders from Toronto last month.

The Bruins ran their winless streak to seven games despite outshooting the Islanders 41-to-38.

Brian Rolston got the goals and Chris Terreri stopped the shots in New Jersey's 2-to-0 shutout at New Jersey. Rolston scored with a minute left in the first period and added an empty-netter as the Devils tied a team record with their fifth straight road win.

Adam Graves and John MacLean each scored twice and Wayne Gretzky added a goal and an assist as the New York Rangers bombed Vancouver 8-to-4. Brian Leetch, Kevin Stevens and Brent Fedyk also scored as the Rangers grabbed a 6-to-1 lead before ending a four-game home losing streak.

Gretzky tied Gordie Howe's North American pro hockey record with his one-thousand, 71st goal. The stat includes goals scored in the W-H-A, which isn't recognized in the N-H-L record book.

Mike Richter made 27 saves and allowed just one goal over the first 46 minutes.

Mark Messier failed to get a point in his return to Madison Square Garden.
