Steve Smith's 28 points paced Atlanta over the New Jersey Nets 111-to-106. Smith hit a key three-pointer late in the game and got into a brief fight with the Nets' Kendall Gill when the game ended.
The game featured 72 fouls. Nets guard Sam Cassell hit for a career-best 36 points. Keith Van Horn added 26 for the Nets.
LaPhonso Ellis had 21 for the Hawks.
The New Jersey Devils had their three game unbeaten streak broken with a 3-2 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Steve Sullivan scored twice for Toronto last night and Curtis Joseph made 39 saves. Sergei Berezin also scored for Toronto. Petr Sykora and Randy McKay scored for New Jersey.
