We don't know whether the school nurse at I-S 148 in the Bronx didn't know how to give CPR, or just didn't think it was necessary.
But the fact is, she didn't perform the life-saving measure when 14-year old Ian Hawkins collapsed during a music class and died Monday morning.
A Board of Ed spokeswoman says the nurse and principal insist the boy was breathing before EMS workers arrived. But students say Ian stopped breathing in the classroom.
Just last week the Board of Ed voted to train two staff members in each school in the Heimlich maneuver and CPR.
