New Rail, Subway Links Proposed For JFK

By Newsradio 88 Staff

Five development teams have submitted design proposals for a rail link connecting terminals at John F. Kennedy International Airport with subway and railroad stations in Queens.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey says the Light Rail System will link the nine passenger terminals within Kennedy's Central Terminal Area and connect them to stations at Jamaica and Howard Beach.

Port Authority Executive Director Robert Boyle says service through the airport terminals is expected to begin in 2001 with Jamaica service starting less than 12 months later. More than 12 million riders are projected to use the rail link in the first year of operation.

A three-mile northern extension to Jamaica will put travelers within easy each of Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, and Long Island via subway and Long sland Railroad stations. Total travel time from JFK to Manhattan via Jamaica could be as little as 34 minutes.

A link to Howard Beach will connect riders to the subway's A train.
