Stock prices are mixed, with the Dow industrials average still losing ground, but the technologies are rebounding. The Nasdaq composite index is up about one percent.
Bonds are reacting negatively to this morning's employment report. The price of the 30-year Treasury is down nearly a full point, pushing the yield up to seven-point-14 percent.
The Federal Trade Commission has rejected a scaled-back proposal to merge with Office Depot, reports the Associated Press. Consumer activist Ralph Nader had opposed the deal saying even with the sale of some stores to rival Office Max, competition would be adversely affected.
Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin is warning Tokyo that Japan's trade surplus may cause friction around the globe. Rubin, commenting after meeting with the Japanese prime minister, says such trade imbalances may fuel protectionism abroad.
