The state Assembly's speaker today proposed a short-term extension of the rent-control laws which are set to expire at midnight Sunday, reports WCBS' Rich Lamb.
Sheldon Silver called for a moratorium on evictions from rent-regulated apartments if the law expires. Silver also said a conference committee comprised of Assembly and Senate representatives should be appointed to hash out one rent-control law by the end of this month.
The Majority Leader of the state Senate, Joseph Bruno, immediately rejected the idea of a temporary extender of the rent-control laws past Sunday at midnight.
As he put it, "There will be no extensions. Not for one hour. Not for one day."
Silver, Bruno and Governor Pataki are meeting today at the state Capitol to discuss rent control, the state budget and other issues.
