Board Of Ed Displays Islamic Symbol In NYC Schools

By Newsradio 88 Staff

As Islamic culture becomes increasingly part of New York's mosaic, the Board of Ed agreed to encourage schools to display the famous star and crescent of the Muslim faith alongside other religious symbols at holiday time.

A lawsuit filed in Federal court by the city's Muslim community over the issue was settled on Friday.

The Board of Education prohibited the symbol on grounds that it was religious and not secular.

Since then, the Board has "come to the conclusion that it is a secular, cultural symbol," a lawyer for the Board told The New York Times after the settlement had been reached at the Federal district court in Brooklyn.
