With the clock clicking down to midnight and what could be the end of rent regulations as we know them in the city, the pressure is on to come up with a deal. Nearly 3-million New Yorkers in more than a million apartments are waiting for word on their fate.
The rent laws are set to expire at midnight tonight unless Governor Pataki, Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and state Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno can come to beforehand.
Authorities are preparing for possible trouble between tenants and landlords if no agreement is reached. There are hotlines for renters. For general information and legal advice, in the city, 212-487-5858. For harrassment complaints, call the NYPD hotline at 212-487-6633.
