Subway Series Heats Up New York

By Newsradio 88 Staff

The Yankees and Mets will meet starting today for the first time during the regular season in a three game "subway series" at Yankee Stadium.

Mayor Giuliani, an acknowledged die-hard Yankees fan, and Queens Borough President Claire Shulman placed a little bet on the outcome when they shook hands on the steps of City Hall.

If the Mets take the series, Giuliani promises to wear a Mets cap during his first press conference after the series concludes. And, says the Mayor, in the much more likely event that the Yankees win, he expects Shulman to show up at Borough Hall in a Yankees cap.

The Yankees-Mets series is part of the interleague schedule begun by Major League Baseball for the first time this year. The last time New York City fans enjoyed a "subway series" was when the Yankees defeated the Brooklyn Dodgers in the '56 World Series.

Over the next two years, both the Dodgers and the New York Giants left the city for the West Coast. The Mets came into existence as an expansion team in 1962.
