Speeding Tickets On The GWB Questioned

By Newsradio 88 Staff

The validity of nearly 400 speeding tickets issued at the George Washington Bridge over a four month period is being called into question.

The Bergen Record reports Port Authority police have not calibrated the speedometers on their cruisers frequently enough to assure their accuracy. Because Port Authority cops track speeders by following them rather than using radar, some tickets have been tossed out by municipal court judges and more are in jeopardy.

The agency says it cut back on the frequency of the calibrations for budgetary reasons, but claims new technology means the mechanism doesn't need to be checked as often. There are judges who apparently aren't buying the argument.
