Ellis Island is falling into ruin and runs the risk of being lost a a historic landmark, a preservation group has charged, reports WCBS' Al Freeman from Washington, D.C.
The National Trust for Historic Preservation placed the island on its list of "America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places." It has scheduled a press conference today on the island to detail its complaints.
The group blamed Congress for under funding the National Park Service, which has allowed decay and lack of maintenance to destroy the buildings that was many immigrants' first stop in the United States.
The group's aim is "to preserve Ellis Island and lesser-known places which together make up the rich tapestry of our nation's history, increased federal funding and more creative partnerships are urgently needed to protect and maintain the historic resources within our park system," according to a spokesman.
