Bookstores Disappearing From Fifth Avenue

By Newsradio 88 Staff

The strip of Fifth Avenue between 44th and 57th streets used to be a book-lovers paradise.

But book-lovers will be hard pressed to find a place to browse and mingle come the end of the month. That's when the Doubleday Book Shop closes its doors, leaving just one book store--a Barnes & Noble--left on the strip.

Since 1989, seven bookstores in the area have closed their doors because of soaring rents and pressure from book superstores.
