Health Officials Try To Isolate Contaminated Water In SuffolkCounty

By Newsradio 88 Staff

Here's an update on a story we told you about a while back.

Suffolk County health officials are trying to zero in on possibly contaminated drinking water. After four private wells were found to be contaminated, WCBS Reporter Jody Fisher tells us a couple of big companies seem to be admitting blame:

When four private wells were found contaminated with a suspected carcinogen that LILCO used to kill weeds at their transformer sites in the 80s, the county health department wanted to test other wells within a thousand feet of a LILCO transformer yard.

Now LILCO and the chemical maker (Novartis) are footing the bill for the tests.

Paul Ponturo with the county health department. He says if you're worried about your well water, call them. But anyone on the public water system is safe and most people in Suffolk use public water.

the testing should take six months.
