A city sanitation truck struck and killed a homeless man in a garbage-strewn lot in the middle of the night. It happened around 3:30 at Union Avenue and Middletown Street, in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, reports Newsradio 88.
The lot was a neighborhood dumping ground....a traffic triangle... and the frontloader was picking up garbage when the operator struck a large box the couple was sleeping in.
The Department of Sanitation says it was a 10-ton frontloader with a bucket out front and if anyone screamed it was unlikely the driver would've heard them.
The truck stopped but by then it was too late for 47-year-old Ted Lovaska. He was dead at the scene. His 68-year-old wife, Katazyna, was treated and released.
The driver of the truck, Joseph Carofano, is a 12-year Department of Sanitation veteran.
He was tested for drugs and alcohol by department safety officers but it just appears to be a tragic accident.
