Major Outbreak Of Lyme Disease Could Be On The Way

By Newsradio 88 Staff

Researchers have come up with a new way to predict increases in lyme disease, and the forecast is not good.

WCBS Newsradio 88 Reporter Fred Fishkin says a major outbreak of lyme disease may be on the way, according to a study published today in the journal Science. Researchers at the institute of ecosystem studies in Millbrook, New York are using the size of last fall's acorn crop to forecast an upswing in lyme cases next year.

The new theory could help warn people when there is increased danger and help in focusing efforts to control tick populations.
