Investigation Into Interstate Puppy Deaths

By Newsradio 88 Staff

Update:

SIX PUPPIES DIED LATER...WHICH BRINGS THE TOTAL UP TO 50.

Authorities are investigating the deaths of 44 puppies in a truck fire last night on Interstate 95 in Greenwich, reports Newsradio 88's Fran Schneidau.

Two out-of-state men initially arrested on animal cruelty charges now have been charged with failure to have proper health certificates.

Charged are 48-year-old David Cook of Jonesboro, Arkansas and 37-year--old Edward Earl Ruyle of Filley, Nebraska. They spent the night in jail and will be back in court April 22nd.

Prosecutor Steven Weiss says it does not look like a case of animal abuse but rather an accident. The trailer where the puppies were being kept contained two propane tanks and a propane heater.

Authorities say the rig was carting 68 dogs through Connecticut when it caught fire.
